Updated 8 October 2026 · 6 min read

The short answer is May, June or September: good weather, long days and far fewer crowds than the summer holidays. Here's what each month is really like, so you can pick the right time for your trip.

Month by month

January & February

Quiet, cheap and wild. Big Atlantic swells make for dramatic storm watching. Some attractions close or cut their hours, so check before you go.

March

Spring arrives early in Cornwall, the mildest corner of England, with camellias and daffodils. St Piran's Day (5 March) celebrates Cornwall's patron saint with parades and flags.

April

Easter brings the first busy spell. Gardens like Heligan are coming into bloom, and the days are longer, but the sea is still cold.

May

One of the best months: long days, wildflowers on the clifftops and no summer crowds until the late-May half term. On 1 May, Padstow's 'Obby 'Oss May Day festival takes over the town.

June

Settled weather and long evenings, before the school holidays. Look out for the Royal Cornwall Show near Wadebridge and the Golowan midsummer festival in Penzance.

July

Warm and lively. It gets very busy once the school holidays start in the second half of the month, so book accommodation and big attractions early.

August

Peak season: the warmest sea, the most events (including Boardmasters in Newquay and Falmouth Week), the fullest car parks and the highest prices. Arrive early everywhere.

September

Many people's favourite: the sea is at its warmest, the crowds thin out after the schools go back, and prices drop. It's often calm and sunny.

October

Golden light, autumn colour in the gardens and quiet beaches. Half term brings families back for a week, and lifeguard cover ends on many beaches.

November & December

The quietest time. Cosy pubs, winter walks, Christmas lights in the towns and some of the cheapest stays of the year.

School holidays: plan around them

Cornwall is busiest during the summer holidays (late July to early September), with smaller peaks at Easter, the late-May half term and the October half term. If you can travel outside those dates, everything is easier: parking, restaurant tables and the roads.

If you're tied to the holidays, read our family guide for tips on beating the crowds. Saturday changeover traffic on the A30 is the one to avoid.

What's the weather really like?

Cornwall is one of the mildest parts of the UK, but the weather changes fast. A sunny morning can become a misty, windy afternoon, so pack layers and a waterproof whatever the month. The sea is coldest in early spring and warmest in late summer. Lifeguards cover many popular beaches through the main season. The RNLI website lists which beaches have lifeguards and when.
